How do deaf people deal with ignorant hearing people? As my son's strongest advocate, I find it extremely frustrating to deal with people who do not understand his deafness. He is only 9 years old and has been deaf in the left ear for 5 years and over the past year has lost hearing in his right ear to the point he has a difficult time understand anything at all.

For example: He is supposed to use an FM system to improve the little hearing he has in his right ear. We cannot use a traditional, in the ear, type of hearing aid because of the chronic infection in the ear. When he could use one in his ear, I made sure he had it DAILY when he was awake. Now that he uses an FM at school they are SUPPOSED to ensure he has it the entire time he is in school. They frequently "forget" to get it out for him or "forget" to charge the batteries. I am frustrated because they then expect him to keep up in the classroom. Then here are the kids who bully him because he can't hear. Sure the school talks to these children but it does no good because they continue to bully him. They have finally started to keep my son away from the kids that tease him, but I feel they could do more.

How do you all deal with ignorant people who don't want to listen?

Thanks for letting me rant.
